IES Chicago Section 2010-2011 Season kicks off with an Architecture Cruise on Chicago’s First Lady with the Chicago Architecture Foundation.
The Official Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise aboard the Chicago’s First Lady fleet is a “must” for out-of-towners and Chicagoans alike. Expert volunteer tour guides—called docents—interpret more than 50 buildings along the Chicago River, revealing how the city grew from a small back-country outpost into one of the world’s most important crossroads in less than 100 years.

This presentation will provide you with an overview of the Model Lighting Ordinance (MLO), as developed in association with International Dark Sky Association. Participants will learn how the MLO:
- Permits reasonable uses of outdoor lighting for night-time safety, utility, security, productivity, enjoyment and commerce
- Minimizes adverse impacts including light trespass and obtrusive light
- Curtails light pollution and improves the nighttime environment for night-sky viewing and astronomy
- Helps protect the natural environment from the adverse effects of night lighting from gas or electric sources
- Conserves energy and resources to the greatest extent possible

Progress Energy is an investor owned utility that has one million outdoor lights in service throughout portions of NC, SC and Florida. The City of Raleigh, NC was the first LED City for CREE and currently has over 63 LED test installations. The city’s strong desire for LED street lighting encouraged Progress Energy Carolinas to develop the first line item bundled lease utility rate for LED street and area lights in the US. Bob Henderson, LC, CLEP led this introduction of LEDs at Progress Energy. The challenge was to develop options to deal with the higher cost of LED fixtures that would earn the allowed return for the utility without having a severe impact on municipal street light budgets. In short a win-win was needed.
Bob will describe some of the barriers and steps taken to break these barriers to introduce and gain utility commission approval of a new rate and associated LED products. He will also discuss other associated lighting decisions along the way. Some of the program topics will include the new rate format and change-out policy, CCT preference and environmental issues, vendor questions about LED luminaires, mA ratings and more.
The following topics will be covered during Bob’s presentation:

Are you aware of the financial incentives available to you to design lighting to surpass standard practices? By attending this event, you will learn about financial incentives and free technical assistance available to encourage superior lighting design. Participants will learn about high performance lighting, daylighting, and controls for both new and retrofit applications. Specifically, the presentations will explore different ways of quantifying performance and provide detailed information on funding available for energy efficient lighting. Our expert panel of speakers will help you with what you need to consider for your project and help identify opportunities. Whether your organization is considering a renovation or new construction, you do not want to miss this presentation!

Building Automation Systems will affect how you design, control or even light your project! Do you have a working knowledge of BAS? Have you considered how to incorporate BAS to maximize energy savings, achieve LEED accreditation, or even use BAS to give your occupants greater comfort? These and many other questions will be answered by Jeff McClain in this presentation.
Jeff McClain, a BAS industry professional, will define Building Automation System Fundamentals, how these technologies can be applied toward LEED Certification, and how lighting interfaces play a role in these systems. Attendees will learn how BAS can impact LEED credits, maximize building operating efficiency, quantify system performance, improve occupant comfort, and increase building sustainability. At the end of this program attendees will be able to: recognize wide range of automation applications, understand how to apply BAS technologies to achieve LEED credits, understand the impact of automation on continuing building operation and occupant comfort / satisfaction, and present automation applications during LEED design presentations.
This program is approved for 1 AIA CEU.

Biomimetics (also known as biomimicry or bionics) is described as a new science in which biological organismx and natural ecosystems are observed and emulated in an effort to design systems, products or even buildings that are innovative, efficient, optimized, and sustainable. In biomimetics, nature is regarded as a mentor who can teach better methods to solve contemporary design challenges based on eons of trial and error. Viewing nature as a teacher allows humans to establish a more symbiotic relationship in which instead of taking resources from her, we take ideas – a ready renewable resource. In this presentation, attendees will be 1) taken through the biomimetic design methodology, 2) observe an architectural design challenge taken through the methodology to arrive at a solution that is more optimal (or effective) than traditional forms of construction, and 3) discuss potentialities for applying this methodology to the creation and manipulation of light. The biomimetic methodology discussed in this presentation can be applied to design challenges of any scope or scale to find better (optomized) solutions.
